Pickleball in La Crescent, Minnesota
One public court site, a city expansion project on the books and no published open-play schedule — what the City of La Crescent, Houston County towns and court directories actually list, checked October 23, 2026.
La Crescent sits on the Minnesota side of the Mississippi, across the river from La Crosse and Onalaska. The city of 5,276 people (2020 census) lies mainly in Houston County, with its northern edge in Winona County. Its pickleball comes down to one public outdoor site at Wieser Memorial Park, which the city planned to enlarge in 2026. Unlike Onalaska or Sparta, no city open-play program, league or class for pickleball was found on the City of La Crescent or La Crescent-Hokah Community Education pages, and neither publishes court hours or fees. This page sets out what the records say and where they disagree. For the Wisconsin side, see the La Crosse-area guide.

Wieser Memorial Park courts
La Crescent city officials cut the ribbon on a new pavilion and pickleball courts at Wieser Memorial Park in September 2023, WXOW reported; the station did not give a court count. The Global Pickleball Network lists 3 dedicated outdoor hard courts, "Added in 2023," with no lights and no court fees. The park was given by the Wieser family to La Crescent Township and later transferred to the city.
- Address. The city's Park & Recreation Commission agenda, the 2022 La Crescent visitor guide and the Global Pickleball Network all give 1817 County Road 6. The Sparta Area Pickleball Association's La Crescent page gives 1811 County 6. Use 1817.
- Pavilion and restrooms. The all-weather pavilion has roll-up walls and flushing toilets (WXOW). Officials had over 50 requests to reserve it when it opened; reservations go through the city. In 2026 the city added 78 rooftop solar panels, and the pavilion is now rated net-zero.
- Hours, rules and fees. The city's Parks & Recreation page lists no court hours, rules, fees or reservation system for the courts. Its facility-use request form covers park space rentals; ask City Hall whether that extends to courts.
- Lights. The Global Pickleball Network says "Lights: No," and no city page mentions court lighting. Plan on daylight.
- Organized play. No open-play times, leagues or clinics at Wieser Park were published by the city, Community Education or the Sparta association, whose La Crescent page names the park with no details.
The 2026 expansion: what is on record
A Minnesota DNR Outdoor Recreation Grant funds half of a Wieser Memorial Park improvement project that includes new courts. The public documents disagree on its size:
| Date | Document | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| FY 2025 award list | Minnesota DNR Outdoor Recreation Grant Awards | Wieser Park, $166,116: ADA-accessible playground and "two new Pickle Ball courts adjacent to the Wieser Park Pavilion" |
| Feb. 23, 2026 | City Council minutes | DNR grant of $277,314 for 50% of the project: playground, surfacing, benches, walking path, bike parking and "three additional pickleball courts"; concrete work estimated at about $205,000; $112,170.74 in donations; start late spring, completion expected mid-summer 2026 |
| Mar. 26, 2026 | Park & Recreation Commission memo | Outdoor recreation project bids due March 30, 2026 |
| Apr. 13, 2026 | City Council minutes | One concrete bid, Wieser Brothers Contractor, $280,185, approved 5–0; the rise over the $205,000 budget is put down to a prevailing-wage increase |
| Aug. 18, 2026 | Ribbon cutting (News 8, Caledonia Argus) | New accessible playground and pavilion solar celebrated; neither report mentions the courts |
The city's 2026 minutes are the later and more detailed record, so this page counts three planned courts, which would make six in all. No source opened confirms that the new courts are finished, and the directories still list three. City Hall (507-895-2595, weekdays 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.) can confirm.
What court directories show
- Global Pickleball Network's La Crescent court search returns nine results, but they are nine locations within its search radius. Only Wieser Memorial Park is in La Crescent; the rest are in La Crosse, Onalaska, Holmen and West Salem, Wisconsin.
- Places2Play's Minnesota city list had no entry for La Crescent, Caledonia, Houston, Hokah, Spring Grove or Brownsville when checked.
- Automated court finders such as Branded Pickleball list the La Crescent Aquatic Center (608 S 7th St) and the Kistler Park tennis courts as pickleball venues, with no court counts or details. No city or club page opened confirms pickleball at either site.
Elsewhere in Houston County
Caledonia. The City of Caledonia's parks page lists one pickleball court at the Veterans Memorial Recreation Area in the north of town, alongside two baseball fields, an outdoor aquatic center, a lighted basketball court and restrooms. On April 8, 2024 the Caledonia City Council accepted quotes from Wieser Construction and Apex Fence to build "the tennis and pickleball courts at Veterans Park," a project estimated at $89,975; in May 2024 the public works director reported steady work on them. The Caledonia Chamber of Commerce places pickleball and tennis courts at the ball park across the street from Veterans Memorial Park. None of these pages gives a court count after the 2024 work, so the city's figure of one is shown above.
Other towns. No city, club or directory page opened lists public pickleball courts in Houston, Hokah, Spring Grove or Brownsville.
Indoor play and groups
No indoor pickleball was found on the La Crescent side. The La Crescent-Hokah Community Education page lists no pickleball program; its office is at 703 S 11th St (507-895-4484, option 5). The nearest published indoor courts, leagues and open play are in La Crosse and Onalaska: see La Crosse courts and indoor venues and Onalaska courts and times. Upriver, Winona has indoor courts.
