Pickleball in Holmen and West Salem, Wisconsin

Village-posted drop-in times in Holmen, an indoor community-center session, six new courts in West Salem with a paddle-rack rotation, and a private fieldhouse — listed exactly as each source gives them, checked October 24, 2026.

Holmen (population 10,661 in the 2020 census) and West Salem (5,277) are both in La Crosse County and part of the La Crosse–Onalaska metropolitan area. Each has one public outdoor court site run by its village. Holmen's Parks & Recreation department posts daily drop-in times at Remington Hills Park, and the Holmen Area Community Center runs indoor open play. West Salem turned its Village Park tennis courts into six pickleball courts in 2025 and posted court rules and a rotation system in 2026. A private multi-sport complex, Features Fieldhouse, adds indoor courts near West Salem. For La Crosse and Onalaska themselves, see the La Crosse-area guide.

Holmen: Remington Hills Park

The Village of Holmen's pickleball page describes Remington Hills Park Courts at 1100 S. Cherry Lane as "two dedicated pickleball courts with permanent in-ground nets and one tennis court" marked for two additional pickleball courts, which need portable nets. The village park directory lists the same: 2 pickleball courts and 1 tennis court with lines for 2 more, plus volleyball and basketball courts.

  • Drop-in times. Every morning from 9 a.m. to noon, weather permitting, and Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to dusk. Outside those times the courts are open throughout the day.
  • Format. Drop-in play is unsupervised and unorganized: players show up, meet others and rotate in. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own paddle and balls.
  • Fees. The village lists none. Pickleheads lists the courts as free to play; the Global Pickleball Network lists no court or member fees.
  • Lights. No village page mentions lights, and the Global Pickleball Network says "Lights: No." Evening drop-in ends at dusk.
  • Weather calls. The village's pickleball page carries a cancellation notice, and Parks & Recreation runs a cancellation hotline at (608) 526-6312. The department office is (608) 526-2152.

Holmen has other courts on its park list (four tennis courts at Deer Wood Park, for example), but no village page or directory opened lists pickleball lines at any park besides Remington Hills.

Holmen: indoor open play

The Holmen Area Community Center at 600 N. Holmen Drive is run as a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater La Crosse and the School District of Holmen, according to its fall 2026 program guide. The guide lists Pickleball Open Play Sessions for "pickleball players of any skill level":

  • September to May: Tuesdays and Thursdays, noon to 2 p.m.
  • June to August: Tuesdays, 8 to 9:45 a.m.
  • Two courts, one for beginners and one for intermediate players. The center provides balls and has a few paddles to lend.
  • Free for members, $5 for non-members. The center's general hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; its phone is 608-399-1870.

The center's membership page lists no prices in its text; it links to a membership brochure and policies instead.

West Salem: Village Park courts

West Salem's six courts at Village Park, 121 Mill Street South, replaced the park's old tennis courts. Village Board minutes trace the project:

Apr.–May 2026Village court rules and rotation systemPosted on the village's Pickleball Courts page

The early $150,000–$200,000 range was an estimate; the $126,783 figure is the construction cost stated in August 2025 once contracts were signed. Pickleheads lists six outdoor asphalt courts with permanent lines and nets, free to play, with restrooms. The Global Pickleball Network lists six dedicated hard courts, public, no fees, and "Lights: No."

Court rules and the paddle rack

The village's posted rules, summarized:

  • Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; first come, first served, except when reserved for Parks & Recreation programs. Pickleball only, at your own risk.
  • Non-marking tennis shoes. No pets, wheels, glass, food, alcohol or smoking on the courts. Paddles, bags and water bottles may come in; chairs, coolers and spectators stay outside the fence. Children under 12 need an adult.
  • Paid instruction is not allowed; lessons, leagues and tournaments must be scheduled through Parks & Recreation.

When players are waiting, the rotation system applies:

  1. Put your paddle in the rack, filling from the left.
  2. When your turn comes, take your paddle and move the indicator to the next waiting group.
  3. One game to 11, win by 2 (see scoring), after a warm-up of no more than five minutes.
  4. Winners may stay for up to two games; new players may challenge in pairs. Singles is allowed.
  5. With five or more players waiting, four come off and four go on, doubles only.
  6. Leave the court promptly and put your paddle back in the rack to keep playing. Never move someone else's paddle.

No drills or practice while others wait, and no one may hold a court.

League and lights

West Salem Parks & Recreation's 2026 spring/summer registration form lists an Adult Pickleball League with recreational and competitive divisions at $20 per team, registration deadline May 8. Its days and times were not on the form, and the online listing no longer showed the league in October 2026. On lights: the posted 10 p.m. closing time does not by itself mean the courts are lit. The board deferred lighting in December 2024 and the Global Pickleball Network lists none, so plan on daylight unless the village says otherwise. Parks & Recreation: 608-786-0222.

West Salem: Features Fieldhouse

Features Fieldhouse describes itself as a family-owned multi-sport complex for "basketball, volleyball, pickleball & more," with court rental and open gym. Its own page does not list pickleball times or prices. Pickleheads lists four indoor wood courts with permanent lines and nets, private, not free, with reservations through the venue. The Global Pickleball Network lists four indoor maple-floor courts, two more for tournaments, and court and member fees. The two directories give different addresses: 220 County Highway M (the venue's own site and Pickleheads) and 1425 WI-16 (Global Pickleball Network). Use the venue's.
