Pickleball in Sparta, Wisconsin
An eight-court outdoor complex, a year-round city open gym and a volunteer association that runs leagues and events — with court counts, fees and times exactly as each source lists them, checked October 22, 2026.
Sparta has one large public outdoor pickleball site and a handful of gyms. Two groups publish most of the schedules: the City of Sparta Parks & Recreation department, which runs an indoor open gym and a winter ladder league, and the Sparta Area Pickleball Association (SAPA), a volunteer non-profit membership group created in 2024 for players in the greater Sparta area and Monroe County, which runs outdoor leagues, events and a GroupMe chat. Court directories fill in the rest. Where sources disagree, both versions are shown. Every time below is "as listed on the named page, checked October 22, 2026" — confirm before you go. Sparta Memorial Park Pickleball Courts
Sparta's main outdoor site is in Memorial Park, a 60-acre city park at 1000 E Montgomery St with an aquatic center, ball fields and six picnic shelters; the Barney Community Center shares the same street address. The city's park page lists "Tennis/Pickleball courts" among its amenities. Its Adult Recreation Programs page and SAPA both describe the Sparta Memorial Pickleball courts as 8 courts open every day from dawn to 10 p.m., and both say no fee or club membership is required.
- Names differ. Pickleheads and Bounce list the complex under "Sparta Barney Community Center" (the Global Pickleball Network uses "Sparta City Parks & Recreation") and describe it as "the newly constructed Sparta outdoor 8 court pickleball complex," with hard courts, permanent lines and permanent nets, water and restrooms. The city's own program text calls the summer site "the Barney Center outdoor courts." An electrician's estimate in a 2025 park board packet gives the courts' address as 917 E. Montgomery St. All of these appear to describe the same 8-court site.
- When they were built. No source opened gives an opening date. The Sparta Park Board's May 6, 2024 agenda listed bids for construction and paving, painting, and fencing and netting of the Memorial Park pickleball courts.
- Restrooms: the city says flush toilets are available in Memorial Park in the summer months.
- Lights — not confirmed. The courts are listed as open to 10 p.m., but no page opened confirms that lights are installed. The park board's March 3, 2025 agenda included "Consideration of Lighting for Pickle Ball Courts to be Funded by Pickle Ball Association," with a lighting supplier's proposal ($47,570 base system, eight LED fixtures, dated September 2024) and an electrician's estimate ($22,534.84 for four 25-foot poles and eight fixtures). The outcome was not in the documents found. SAPA's About page still lists lights under future projects, and the Global Pickleball Network listing says "Lights: No." Plan on daylight unless the association says otherwise.
Open play, leagues and events, as listed
These are the recurring sessions published on October 22, 2026. The city and SAPA run separate programs, so a Tuesday ladder appears twice: SAPA's outdoor ladder and the city's indoor winter ladder.
| Session | When | Where | Cost | Listed by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pickleball Open Gym | Mon, Wed, Fri 8–11 a.m., year-round | Barney Community Center gym; outdoor courts in summer | $2 drop-in; season $15 residents / $26.25 non-residents | City (SAPA lists the same days, times and $2 fee) |
| Pickleball Ladder League (indoor) | Tuesdays 6–9 p.m., Nov. 3, 2026 – Mar. 23, 2027 | Barney Community Center gym | Season $30 residents / $52.50 non-residents; $4 drop-in | City |
| Ladder League 2026 (outdoor doubles) | Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m.; no end date listed | The 8-court Sparta complex | Free for SAPA members; $20 non-members | SAPA |
| Thursday play | Thursdays; hours not listed ("Fall 2025 Schedule Coming SOON") | St. John's School gym | $1–2 donation suggested | SAPA |
| Halloween 1 Day Ladder League | Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, noon | Sparta pickleball courts | Free for SAPA members | SAPA Events page |
SAPA's outdoor ladder is open to all abilities. Players register on the Global Pickleball Network (GPN) and RSVP for each week; groups of four play three games to 15, and groups of five play four games to 11. Earlier in the season SAPA listed a "Royalty of the Court" event on September 12, 2026 (32-player maximum, 7-minute games, winners move up a court). How ladders move players is explained in ladder leagues explained.
Classes. SAPA's Clinics page said "No current classes scheduled" when checked, and the city's adult programs page listed no pickleball class. Members get free learn-to-play sessions and outdoor clinics when they run.
Indoor gyms
Barney Community Center
The city's community center lists the same 1000 E Montgomery St address as Memorial Park. SAPA lists 3 indoor courts on the gym floor with portable nets. The city says all levels are welcome, even if you have never played, that drop-ins are first come, first served, and that paddles can be borrowed from the Parks & Rec office. SAPA also keeps spare paddles and balls at the Barney Center and the Memorial courts. The directories list only the outdoor complex under this name, not the gym courts.
St. John's School gym
Listings for 419 Jefferson Ave differ:
- SAPA: 3 indoor courts, gym floor, portable nets, $1–2 donation recommended, play on Thursdays, subject to change for church functions; watch GroupMe for changes.
- Pickleheads: 3 indoor wood courts with permanent lines; bring your own net; "a membership is required to play."
- Bounce: 3 courts, membership, non-permanent nets.
Pickleheads and Bounce do not say whose membership is meant. Ask SAPA before you go.
Meadowview Middle School
Pickleheads and Bounce list 4 free outdoor courts at Meadowview Middle School, 1225 N Water St, with permanent lines overlaid on a tennis court. Pickleheads says the nets are tennis nets, "a little taller than a normal pickleball net" (see net height); Bounce calls them shared nets, and one Bounce list shows 7 courts for the site. Neither the city nor SAPA lists Meadowview, and no source gives school-day access rules.
Joining SAPA and GroupMe
- Dues: $20 for 2026; memberships renew each calendar year. Pay online or in person at the courts.
- What members get: free outdoor league play and outdoor clinics, and discounts on tournaments and special events. Membership is not needed to play the Memorial courts at unscheduled times.
- GroupMe: the association uses the free app for indoor and outdoor play updates; ask through its Facebook group to be added.
- Open-play customs (SAPA's new-player page): when many players are waiting, four paddles are stacked to enter the next game, and balls are shared. Wear court shoes rather than running or walking shoes.
Before you go: checklist
- Check the page that sets the time: the city's Adult Recreation Programs page for open gym and the indoor ladder, SAPA's site or GroupMe for outdoor leagues, events and St. John's.
- Outdoor courts are free and open dawn to 10 p.m. as listed, but lights are not confirmed; plan on daylight.
- Bring $2 for the Barney open gym, or buy a season pass through the city's online registration.
- No paddle? Borrow one from the Parks & Rec office or SAPA's spares; the beginner walkthrough covers a first game.
