Minnesota pickleball guide

The largest public court sites, the city gyms and clubs that keep play going through winter, and links to this site's Minnesota city pages — each figure shown with the source that gives it, checked October 28, 2026.

Minnesota has no single official list of pickleball courts. Cities, park boards and YMCAs each publish their own, and crowd-built directories try to add them up — with very different totals. Pickleheads, a user-maintained court finder, lists 457 locations with 2,063 courts and ranks Minnesota 17th among the states for court count. Places2Play, another directory, says it lists 250 courts across 124 cities (updated October 2026). Use both as starting points only. This guide relies on city and venue pages first, then local news, and names a directory wherever it is the only source. For courts closest to La Crosse, go straight to the La Crescent, Winona and Rochester pages.

Bloomington's park page (updated April 2026) and Roseville's pickleball page give court counts and lighting. Most other city pages list "pickleball" as an amenity without numbers, so several counts come from Explore Minnesota (the state tourism office's guide) or from directories.

For scale: in December 2023 Pickleball Union called the Lake Hallie, Wisconsin, expansion near Eau Claire — 12 new courts added to 6 — "the single biggest pickleball facility in the state of Wisconsin and Minnesota." Maple Grove's Lakeview Knolls opened six months later with the same total of 18. See the Eau Claire page for Lake Hallie.

Minneapolis, Saint Paul and the west metro

Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board lists dedicated pickleball courts at three parks — Dickman, Lake Nokomis and Loring — plus pickleball lines on tennis courts at 11 locations. Four more sites (Fuller, Holmes, Lynnhurst and McRae) have lines on a basketball court, practice tennis court or ice rink; players bring their own net or borrow one from the recreation center. The Lake Nokomis courts at 2401 E. Minnehaha Parkway opened in July 2023 as the first dedicated courts in the park system, according to the Longfellow Nokomis Messenger. The park board says more courts may come through its capital plans "as funding allows" (page last modified August 6, 2025).

Saint Paul. The city says its outdoor pickleball courts are on tennis courts unless marked otherwise, and indoor courts are in recreation center gyms, with open pickleball and lessons at several centers. Locations are on its court map and schedule (page last edited October 7, 2025). Explore Minnesota lists Edgecumbe Recreation Center with 2 indoor and 4 outdoor courts.

Maple Grove. CCX Media reported in May 2025 that the city had built 24 dedicated courts in ten years, 18 of them at Lakeview Knolls. The same report covers a court at Fish Lake Woods Park closed after neighbor complaints: it sat 70 feet from townhomes, against the 150 feet that sound studies in other cities recommend. More on setbacks is on the pickleball noise page.

Mankato and northern Minnesota

Mankato's Tourtellotte Park courts began as tennis courts converted to six pickleball courts in 2014; the Mankato Free Press reported in February 2023 that six more would be added east of them, making 12, and that the new courts would be lighted. KEYC covered the opening of the six new courts on October 18, 2023. The city's project page (updated May 30, 2026) says Tourtellotte was the only dedicated pickleball site in Mankato until 2023 and is asking residents about a redevelopment, with court lighting and a permanent restroom among the options. An undated Free Press report puts the council-approved replacement of the six original courts at $768,500.

In Grand Rapids, Visit Grand Rapids lists 10 dedicated courts at the Itasca County Family YMCA, open to the public with no membership or fee from late spring to early fall.

Public indoor play in Minnesota runs in scheduled blocks in shared gyms, so the number of courts often depends on the day. None of the city pages above lists a statewide season; each sets its own dates.

Before you go: checklist

  • Check the city or venue page; directory counts and hours lag behind.
  • Bring a portable net to courts lined on tennis courts, basketball courts or rinks (see net height).
  • Plan on daylight unless a source lists lights for that site.
  • In winter, expect booked sessions or day passes rather than walk-on courts.
  • Use outdoor balls outside (indoor vs. outdoor balls).
  • This site is not a venue and cannot take bookings.
