Pickleball tournament formats
What "double elimination," "pool play" or "round robin to medal round" means on a tournament entry page, how many matches each format gives you, and how ties are broken under USA Pickleball's 2026 rules.
USA Pickleball approves six formats for sanctioned tournaments: single elimination with consolation, double elimination, round robin, pool play, non-pool play and team play. The tournament director usually chooses, and the exact wording is in Section 15 of the 2026 Official Rulebook. Unsanctioned events and other tours borrow the names but not always the details, so read each event's format description.
The formats compared
| Format (2026 rule) | How it works | Matches guaranteed | Total matches, 8 teams |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double elimination (15.B.1) | First loss drops you to the consolation bracket; a second loss ends your event. Consolation winner plays the winners'-bracket winner for gold. | 2 | 14, or 15 if the extra game is needed |
| Single elimination with consolation (15.B.2) | Losers drop to a consolation bracket that plays for third place; one consolation loss eliminates. | 2 | Depends on how the consolation draw is built |
| Single elimination without consolation (15.B.3) | One loss and you are out. Used for Pro and Senior Pro brackets. | 1 | 7 |
| Round robin (15.B.4) | Everyone plays everyone; most matches won takes first. | Teams − 1 (7 here) | 28 |
| Pool play (15.B.5) | Two or more pools each play a round robin to seed a single- or double-elimination playoff. | Pool size − 1 | 12 in two pools of 4, plus the playoff |
| Non-pool play (15.B.6) | A round robin seeds a single- or double-elimination medal round. | Teams − 1 | 28, plus the medal round |
| Team play (15.B.7) | Rostered teams play a set of singles, gender doubles and mixed doubles matches. | Set by the event | Set by the event |
Every entrant is entitled to at least two scheduled matches per event, except in single elimination without consolation (Rule 15.F). The totals are counting: a round robin needs one match per pair of teams, a knockout eliminates one team per match, and double elimination needs, per Wikipedia, 2n − 2 matches, or 2n − 1 when the champion has lost once.
Match-count calculator
Formulas, for n teams:
round robin matches = n × (n − 1) ÷ 2, each team plays n − 1, in n − 1 rounds if n is even or n rounds (one bye each round) if n is odd
single elimination = n − 1
double elimination = 2n − 2, or 2n − 1 with the extra game
pool play = the round-robin formula applied to each pool, with teams split into the fewest pools no larger than the target size, as evenly as possible
court time ≈ matches × minutes per match ÷ courts
The 20-minute default is the top of the 15–20 minutes per match that pickleball.com's organizer guide suggests planning for, plus a 15–20% time buffer. Court time is a floor: it assumes every court is always busy, which brackets cannot manage because later rounds wait for earlier ones.
Round robin and its tiebreakers
In a USA Pickleball round robin the winner is the team with the most matches won (15.B.4). When teams tie, the 2026 rulebook applies these tiebreakers in order:
- Head-to-head record among the tied teams (15.B.4.b).
- Point differential across all games played (15.B.4.c).
- Point differential in the head-to-head games (15.B.4.d).
- Point differential against the next-highest-ranked team, by matches won (15.B.4.e).
- Most points scored across all round-robin matches (15.B.4.f).
The fifth step is new compared with the 2025 rulebook, whose Rule 12.C.4 listed only the first four. A team that withdraws, retires or forfeits has its round-robin results removed from the standings and cannot play in the elimination playoff or medal match, though the results still count toward ratings (15.B.4.a). Wikipedia's round-robin article notes the classic three-way tie (A beats B, B beats C, C beats A), which is why the order is fixed in advance.

At a sanctioned event the rulebook order governs.
Double elimination and the game to 15
- Every pair plays once: six lines between four teams.
- Pool total: 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6 matches, 3 per team; most matches won ranks first (15.B.4).
- Winners' bracket: two first-round matches, then the winners' final.
- Consolation bracket: first-round losers meet; a second loss ends the event (15.B.1).
- Consolation final: the consolation winner plays the loser of the winners' final. The loser of this match takes third place.
- Final: winners'-bracket champion against the consolation winner.
- Game to 15, only if the consolation team wins the final (15.B.1). Six matches without it, seven with it: 2n − 2 or 2n − 1.
In the general double-elimination format described by Wikipedia, the losers'-bracket finalist must beat the winners'-bracket finalist twice, and the second meeting is a full "if game" or bracket reset. USA Pickleball shortens that second meeting to a single tie-breaker match to 15 points (15.B.1). The 2026 rulebook also does not allow rally scoring in double-elimination doubles events (15.C.2).
Pool play and medal rounds
Pool play splits a bracket into two or more round-robin pools that seed a single- or double-elimination playoff (15.B.5). Non-pool play runs one round robin and then seeds a medal round, played as two of three games to 11, one game to 15 or one game to 21, all win by 2 (15.B.6). Standard tournament scoring options are best two of three to 11, best three of five to 11, or one game to 15 or 21; one game to 11 is allowed only in round robins of six or more teams (15.C.1). USA Pickleball's format guide recommends best two of three to 11 and allows games to 7 in bad weather, with the tournament director's approval.
Other tours set their own versions. In a November 2023 announcement the APP said its amateur events would move from double elimination to round-robin pool play followed by playoffs, starting with the January 2024 APP Midwest Open: pools of four to six, pool games of one game to 15 win by 2, and medal matches as best two of three to 11. Check the current event page for the format in use.
Where sources disagree
- Who wins bronze. The USA Pickleball rules award third place to the loser of the consolation final in double elimination and to the consolation-bracket winner in single elimination with consolation (15.B.1, 15.B.2). pickleball.com help articles say some events play semifinal losers for third or share bronze, and place a consolation winner below the main bracket's bronze.
- Guaranteed matches in single elimination. pickleball.com's organizer guide says players in single elimination are guaranteed two or three matches before they can be eliminated; Rule 15.F guarantees two only when a consolation bracket exists and one without it.
- No-show time. Rule 18.F gives a player 10 minutes to report after a match is called (Rule 18.F.2 sets 15 minutes for a multiple-game match) before a forfeit; pickleball.com's organizer guide suggests a 5-minute grace period for events it helps run.
- Rally-scoring exceptions. The format guide still names the 2025 events as side-out only; the 2026 rulebook names 2026 events (15.C.2). See rally scoring.
Reading an event listing, step by step
- Find the format name and match it to the table above; "RR to bracket" or "pool play" means round robin first, then elimination.
- Note the game format: best of three to 11, one game to 15 or 21, side-out or rally (see scoring explained).
- Count your minimum matches: pool size − 1 in pool play, 2 in double elimination or single elimination with consolation.
- Check whether the event is USA Pickleball sanctioned; if not, the director's published rules, not the rulebook, decide tiebreakers.
- Plan your day: USA Pickleball's tournament director guide has players check in at least 30 minutes before their bracket and limits warm-ups to 2 to 3 minutes; Rule 21.F.1 allows up to two minutes to change ends between games.
Checklist before you register
- Format and medal-round structure are stated on the event page.
- Tiebreaker order is published (sanctioned events: Rule 15.B.4).
- Game scoring and whether rally scoring applies.
- Your events do not overlap on the same day (15.D).
- Skill or age division fits your rating; see ratings explained.
- You know withdrawing from a round robin removes your results from the standings (15.B.4.a).
Weekly club play often uses ladders instead of brackets; see how ladder leagues work.
