Rally scoring: rules, freeze variants and where it's used
Under rally scoring every rally is worth a point, whoever served. Here is what the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook says about it, how the "freeze" and win-on-serve endings differ, and which events use which version.
In rally scoring a point goes to whichever side wins the rally. Standard pickleball still uses side-out scoring, where only the serving side scores (Rule 4.A). In the 2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook, rally scoring is a provisional option: Rule 14.A in Section 14, "Variations on Standard Pickleball." Rule numbers here follow the 2026 rulebook; the official text always wins.
Side-out vs. rally scoring at a glance
| Item | Standard side-out scoring | Rally scoring (14.A) |
|---|---|---|
| Who can score | Only the serving side (4.A) | Whoever wins the rally (14.A.2) |
| Servers per side out (doubles) | Both partners, except on the first service turn of the game (rules summary) | One. When the serving team loses a rally, it is a side out (14.A.5) |
| Score call (doubles) | Three numbers: serving team's score, receiving team's score, server number (6.B.2) | Two numbers: server's score, then receiver's score (14.A.3) |
| Who serves after a side out | The first serve of each side out is made from the right-hand court (rules summary) | The player correctly positioned on the right side for the team's score (14.A.4) |
| Winning the game | First side to score the winning point wins (4.B). Tournament games are win by two, but team play may use win by one (15.C) | |
- The score is called as two numbers, the server's score first (14.A.3), and the ball is served.
- Whoever wins the rally scores a point, serving or receiving (14.A.2).
- Serving side wins: one point, and the same server switches serving areas and serves again (14.A.4).
- Receiving side wins: one point plus a side out. Only one player per team serves before a side out (14.A.5).
- 2026 USA Pickleball rule: the rally win is the receivers' 21st point and wins the game (14.A.2, 4.B).
- Win-on-serve rules (see the variants table): a side out but no point, so the receivers stay on 20.
- They must then win a rally on their own serve to reach 21.
Who serves, and from where
Each team has one server per side out, so the call has no server number (14.A.3, 14.A.5). After each side out, the player correctly positioned on the right side for the team's score serves (14.A.4). Positions follow the score, so a team that wins a point while receiving may have to switch sides before it serves. In Pickleball Scotland's worked example (based on the January 2025 USA Pickleball rules), X and Y win the opening rally, lead 1–0, switch sides, and Y serves from the right-hand court.
Worked example: the end of a game to 21
The serving team has 18, the receivers have 20, and the receivers win the rally. Under the 2026 rule they score their 21st point and win 21–18; the 2026 change document notes that under the 2025 rule a receiver could not be awarded a game-ending point. Under win-on-serve rules they get only a side out: the next call is "20–18" with them serving, and they must win a rally on their own serve to reach 21.
Freeze and win-on-serve variants
A "freeze" stops a team's score near the end so it can score only on its own serve; Pickleball.com notes the trigger varies by event. Published versions:
| Ruleset | Game | End-of-game rule |
|---|---|---|
| USA Pickleball 2026, Rule 14.A (provisional) | 11, 15 or 21; win by 2 | No freeze. Any rally can win the game, including one won by the receivers. |
| USA Pickleball 2025 provisional rule (4.F.1) | 11, 15 or 21 | "Game point is scored only when serving." |
| USA Pickleball singles rule, effective May 1, 2024 | 11, 15 or 21; win by 2 | The game-winning point can only be scored by the serving player. |
| MLP DreamBreaker, 2026 | 21, rally scoring | Players switch out every four rallies. The DreamBreaker "must be won on serve." |
| Classic MLP-style freeze (as described by Pickleheads, 2024) | 21 | A team reaching 20 is frozen and must win on serve; the trailing team freezes at 18, and play returns to traditional scoring. |
| Collegiate Pickleball Tour, 2025-26 | 21; win by 2; ends change at 11 | A team's score is frozen only while it has game point and is returning serve; only one team can be frozen at a time. |
| Pickleball Scotland club version | 15 | The first team to 14 freezes, and so does the other team when it reaches 14. "First to 15 while serving wins." |
Where rally scoring is used
- USA Pickleball sanctioned events. The tournament director may choose rally scoring, except in double-elimination doubles events, 2026 Golden Ticket events and the 2026 National Championships (15.C.2). Team play may use standard or rally scoring (15.B.7).
- Major League Pickleball. In September 2023, The Dink reported that MLP dropped its freeze, which had switched games from rally to traditional scoring at 20–18, so game point had to be won on serve. In June 2024, Pickleball.com reported a freeze on match point was back for MLP D.C. Since January 2025, MLP plays gender and mixed doubles with side-out scoring to 11 and keeps rally scoring for DreamBreakers to 21, which it continues in 2026.
- College. The Collegiate Pickleball Tour plays every game with rally scoring to 21, otherwise following the USA Pickleball rulebook.
- Clubs. Pickleball Scotland published a club version and advises clubs to fix the game length in advance.
Tournament formats, timeouts and end changes
All standard rules not modified by 14.A apply (14.A.1), including timeouts and end changes.
| Game length (15.C.2) | Match formats | Time-outs (21.A) | End change (21.B) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 points | 1 game, best of 3 or best of 5 | 2 | 6 |
| 15 points | 1 game, best of 3 or best of 5 | 2 | 8 |
| 21 points | 1 game, best of 3 or best of 5 | 3 | 11 |
| 7 points (bad weather) | 1 game or tie-breaker, director approval (15.C.2.d) | — | 4 |
How USA Pickleball's rule developed
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| 2023 rulebook cycle | A proposal to add a rally scoring option for singles and doubles failed the Board vote, and a task force was to be formed in 2023. |
| May 1, 2024 | Provisional rally scoring for singles took effect, with game point scored only when serving. Doubles was held back: the Rules Committee saw no clearly superior doubles method yet. |
| 2025 | The provisional option covered singles and doubles round-robins, team play and singles double elimination. Game point could still be scored only when serving. |
| 2026 | Moved to Rule 14.A; a receiver can now win the game. After third-party research, USA Pickleball reported that most players and spectators polled preferred a point on every serve. It will decide in 2027 whether to extend, make permanent or drop the format. |
Before a rally-scored game: checklist
- Game length agreed (11, 15 or 21), and whether it is win by two.
- Endgame rule agreed: no freeze (2026 USA Pickleball), win on serve, or a freeze, and at which score.
- Score called as two numbers, server's score first.
- One server per side out, starting from the right court after each side out.
